When it comes to Apples you want to make sure you are buying organic.

They are in their organic form so very good for you in so many ways whether your just eating raw or juicing, making desserts like sugar free apple sorbet or your favourite warming apple crumble.

Botanical name: Malus domestica

Delicious, crunchy, juicy, and sweet are all adjectives used to describe apples. They travel well, making them a popular lunchbox food and snack. Apples are extremely versatile. Although they are often thought of as distinctly American, they actually originated in Mesopotamia. Around 2,500 apple varieties are grown in the U.S., and 7,500 grown worldwide.

What Else Should You Look for in an Apple?

Because much of the antioxidant content of an apple is found in its peel, you’ll want to leave the peel on when you eat it. For this reason, look for organic apples. If you purchase conventional apples, briefly soaking them in a solution of 10 percent vinegar to 90 percent water may help to remove some pesticides (and bacteria).

When it comes to choosing an apple:

  • Choosing an apple with shiny, not dull, skin (dull apples will not be crisp)
  • Firm apples free from bruises and punctures
  • Refrigerating apples at 4 degrees celcius to maintain crispness
  • Protecting cut apples from browning by dipping them into a solution of one part citrus juice to three parts water
